Toothaches are no fun

One part of living that I do not enjoy is when something hurts and I am not sure how to take care of it.  I have been active in sports my entire life and have sprained my ankle a few times.  Now I know what I can do to start the healing process and get to eliminating the pain.  But there are some injuries that happen and you cannot simply help mend it on your own.

I have found the hardest area like that for me is in my mouth.  Dental problems don’t seem to ever be able to be taken care of by a regular person.  That is why I really dislike having dental issues.  If my ankle hurts I have that covered, but if my tooth hurts there is simply nothing I can do.  Those flashes of pain that shoot into your mouth and gums are just awful and apparently 22% of Americans feel something similar every six months. So what are some of these issues and what can we do?

If your teeth start to give that sharp pain when you eat or drink hot things then you are not alone.  The sudden flash of pain is usually from the erosion of your tooth enamel. Or it can be the exposed nerves in your teeth that are causing all of that pain. When that happens I know there is not much I can personally do to fix the problem. So at that point I know I am off to see a dentist.

Some of the worst areas that cause pain are flat out tooth decay.  This is when you get a cavity in your teeth.  The enamel has been worn down enough to start causing those painful shooting bursts.  The decay can start on the sides of the or even from the top.  It can be very difficult to notice or it can be a bit of a shadow on your tooth.

Another area that can cause the similar jults of horror are cracked teeth.  It can happen as easily as biting down on a kernel of popcorn.  It can cause your tooth to crack and will be a very painful ordeal.  If anyone of these things happens  it is important to see your medical healthcare provider right away.  Since most of these problems are not able to be home remedies the sooner you can see a dentist the better!

Prevent Tooth Decay

Staying healthy is an important part of living.  The consequences for living an unhealthy lifestyle or simply skipping on certain healthy habits can cause lots of financial stress and physical pain in the long run.  As I have gotten older I have come to realize that the way to overcome lots of physical issues and health issues is to simply stop them before they start.  Preventative medicine or preventative healthy living is a great way to overcome issues before they become issues. So when it comes to your oral hygiene and not having to see the dentist so much there are a few things you can do.

Now really the best medicine is simply to follow what your parents or guardians have told you for yours.  Brush your teeth at least twice a day and try to floss.  These simple remedies are the best way to eliminate plaque on a daily basis and prevent the nasty tartar build up.  The prevention of those two things can help keep gingivitis and gum disease away.  That in turn can help many cardiovascular diseases from happening and lots of other diseases that can be caused by bacteria getting into your bloodstream from your damaged gums.  So simply by doing the basics a lot of pain and lots of financial problems can be avoided.

It is also good to prevent major issues from happening by having a professional tell you if they are in the works and how to specifically prevent those dental problems for you.  This means having regular dental checkups.  Many health insurances cover the majority of the cost so taking the time once or twice a year to see how your health is progressing can be vital in stopping a problem before it starts. If a dentist sees cavities or signs of gum issues he can help treat the problem before it becomes a medical emergency.  This is very important and my biggest recommendation.

The next big way to prevent problems for your mouth is to work on a better diet.  It is essentially what you eat that causes the majority of problems. By watching your intake of certain foods you can prevent lots of dental problems. The three C’s is a good rule of things to attempt to avoid on a regular basis.  That is Cookies, Candy, and Cake.  These things are filled with plaque and tartar causing sugars and are simply not healthy for you.  So if you can avoid eating them you may save yourself lots of physical and financial trouble. Stay safe and stay healthy!
